Call me old fashioned, but I'd probably miss all the spectacle and announcements and such. I like having this huge info dump of hot new releases all at once and I like the excitement and discussion it brings, though it seems already it is becoming less and less that and announcements are getting more spread out.
E3
Concept »
The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was a video game industry trade show held annually since 1995. It was usually held in the late spring or early summer in Los Angeles, California.
How would you feel if E3 went away?
I'd be bummed because I've never had the pain/pleasure of witnessing the spectacle first-hand. And then I'd be bummed because we'd be out one glorious, overpriced, beautiful trainwreck.
I'd be fine with it if the marketing budget that companies put towards E3 went to "better causes," but quite frankly, I can't think of any. Other than just having money to help keep a company afloat, and NOT dragging Pelé onstage to help hock a game he knows nothing about.
But also, if it weren't for E3, we wouldn't get to have a yearly place for bearing witness to the likes of this fucker.
TL;DR - I feel that since FMV has all but dried up, all we have left to enjoy is the goofy performances of E3.
I'd feel conflicted. I think it has become increasingly irrelevant but I also look forward to it out of pure tradition. If it stays I want them to go back to the way it was a couple years ago and have every conference be an unmitigated trainwreck. They're still pretty bad, but they've come a long way, and I want that progress undone. Bring back Mr.Caffeine.
Mildly sad yet another tradition was gone, but most likely everyone would just do their own presentations individually around the same time period.
Worst part about it would be losing a lot of pretty solid GB content. Everything between a podcast held on a porn set to Xavier Woods tossing Alex off the set was because of E3.
I'd miss the press conferences. They're one of the rare times when it feels like anything can happen.
I don;t really care about E3 its self to much...
but if you try to take away my week of extra long Bomb casts with various amazing guests, I'm gonna knife you.
It would mostly suck because it's the one huge yearly event dedicated solely to gaming. It's the Super Bowl of videogames. Whenever I was young and my parents would try to tell me how I should grow up and stop playing games I would be able to point to E3 and say LOOK, look how big this thing is and it's not just for kids there are plenty of passionate adults involved. So it would be a shame to lose all that, but ironically I wouldn't be surprised if in the long run it would mean easier access to all that content for non-press individuals.
The same. Oh no, I miss another "FF7R gets announced and people try their hardest to look like they give a shit", sad day.
I always made E3 an event, trying to watch the big dogs conferences but last year and the way this one is shaping up show me that things are changing. I liked Vinny's points about "don't make it what it was 10 years ago" in terms of letting the viewpoint that it's just an industry show die. I'm down with that and think that there's definitely room for more streaming options and Nintendo Direct approaches. I don't think E3 as an entity will go away - but I'd like to see it branch out creatively - maybe have it's own streaming platform where we can essentially "change channels" to see who is up next. twitch might already be the way things are going but I like watching AGDQ and TwitchCon or whatever where I can see three channels with different programming and if I want to watch the more technical explanation of what makes Mass Effect Andromeda tick, or just see a channel that's all trailers I think it's a good thing if the expo evolves.
I don't think it matters, as long as something replaces it though. E3 can be exciting, but all it is, is new, big gaming news in a bigger fashion than just an article you can read, and so if something came in that form, I wouldn't mind. I feel like I should post this.
The best part about e3 is giving the industry an excuse to gather together. That always leads to interesting stuff, whether it be giant pissing contests between billion dollar publishers or interesting conversations between developers big and small.
I wouldn't miss it. The news overload is kind of a neat thing, but there are so many side press conferences, conventions, etc. that game companies can get the news out by themselves.
Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo can just update their blog with news and videos. Rockstar can post a new Red Dead trailer to YouTube and the internet will still flip out and talk about it. Firaxis could send out a press release saying "We will debut Civ VI soon. See you at our PAX Prime panel!" The Nintendo Directs are certainly more polished and detailed than the Ubisoft press conferences.
I'll miss some of the spectacle and Giant Bomb's coverage, but it won't be a great loss either. (And most of the spectacle is from hearing 20+ new games being debuted in a span of 3 days. Hearing about new games by itself is fun, so you don't need to announce them all at the same time to get excited for games)
I'd miss it big time. I would totally understand why it would go away as it makes it easier for both companies and the press to not travel to LA and reveal and cover new games respectively at the Staples Center. I bet the whole Giant Bomb crew will feel relieved that they wouldn't have to stress about setting up for the Conference streams and scheduling interviews. However, the spectacle of seeing new footage of announced games and/or the new reveals are really something that you can't get anywhere else besides E3. Dating back to 2004, I've been a sucker for how companies like Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and others have handled their business during this event and how they're going to convince customers why they should buy their hardware and software. I'd feel bummed out if it went away.
I would miss the spectacle for sure, the Crew talking over the conferences and the nightly streams are some of the best things to me, if only to hear Jeff yell out "WEEEEeeeeeeeEED!".
I wouldn't be angry or anything, just a little sad, since I also like the reveals and dumb moments throughout the week.
Without them being center stage in some big event like this I barely know about or watch any side/individual streams, mostly because GB is essentially my one source of vidja game news (though I do tune into GS during E3 for their stage floor stream stuff).
Quick, someone do that shoulder-shrug text emoji thing.
Would anything change, really? Instead of big announcements all condensed into one period, cool stuff is spread out across the year (maybe)?
It would just be replaced by individual company's doing they're own set up live streams, which is exactly how i watch the E3 press conferences anyway. Same shit! To put it simply for myself. Either way they don't need E3 to set up a conference around the same time of the year and stream it out. Although im sure it has some more mainstream traction than to us.
Of course it could easily be replaced by different events or companies doing their own thing like EA, but after twenty years it would be hard for me not to miss it. Not only because of the anouncement of new games but also not getting the coverage from this site; the conference commentary stuff is great and the late night shows they're doing is some of the best material that's on Giant Bomb.
I'm with you on loving just the metric ton of announcements that happen on that big press conference day. It's always just been so fun to be overloaded like that. That being said, I don't think I'd be real surprised or even that broken up if it didn't happen. Honestly the biggest bummer for me would be losing GB's E3 press conference streams and late night shows.
@liquiddragon: I'd be very sad. Sure there's plenty of other snazzy and cool gaming events, but this is the big one that gives that feeling of ''it's gaming christmasss!'' every year. The hype is just too much fun, I'd miss it.
