The current crop of consoles is approaching the fourth year since launch. Both consoles entered the market at surreal times as Covid was still churning and consumers were ready for something to do while at home.
In the years since the gaming industry has seen even more shifts and changes. Xbox has shifted toward a digital approach with cloud gaming and Game Pass while PlayStation has remained focused on tentpole titles.
Neither approach has fully worked.
Xbox made news with a series of shuddered developers while PlayStation continues to vary its strategy by venturing into PC ports for their once-exclusive titles.
Throw in new competition from handheld gaming PCs and the possible Switch 2.
So as these consoles approach the possible middle of their lifecycles, and with refreshes potentially on the horizon, do you view this console generation as a flop? Has it yet to reach its full potential? Or has the PS5 and/or Xbox Series already been successful in your eyes?
