I think Season 5 is so disliked primarily because it was the first that went into the asshole of the much abused reset button - with Lumen leaving and having absolutely no bearing on Dexter's character development further down the series, with the writers handling the post-Rita situation by not handling it at all etc.

But that Lumen stuff was so much fun. (Although I agree that it has zero impact on Dexter's character arc)

I would watch a spin off of Dexter season 5, Law & Order SVU style.

The only season I outright hated was season 8. What a fucking shitshow.
