    A safety is scored in American Football when the ball becomes dead in the end zone of the offense. The defense is awarded 2 points for a safety.

    A safety can be scored when the ball carrier is tackled in their own end zone, or when the ball carrier steps out of bounds. Safeties are the only way a team can score without having possession of the football.
